Jarvis Street Baptist Church, 130 Gerrard Street East. The founding of the church dates from approximately 1829. Although there are few early records, church meetings were initially held at the Masonic Hall on Colborne Street until property was purchased on Lombard Street for the construction of a small chapel in 1832. In 1844, the congregation moved to Bond Street and was simply known as the Baptist Church. The church’s membership grew slowly, but by the late 1860s numbered 400. In 1875, Jarvis Street Baptist Church was erected at a cost $103,000. aided by the Hon. William McMaster’s sizeable underwriting of the construction costs.
