Lady Jane Franklin. Autograph letter to William Kennedy, 3 March 1853. Manuscript.

Sir John Franklin’s wife never gave up hope that he would be found alive. She campaigned assiduously for searching expeditions, and when she thought the Admiralty wasn’t doing enough, paid for expeditions herself. This letter to William Kennedy, who was planning a second expedition on her behalf, shows how involved she was in the planning and the details of preparation.

I suppose you know that Captn Inglefield begs you will send the provisions on board as soon as you can, as they are ready for stowing the hold.... Have you engaged Harris? I think he shd not be let slip. What have become of Penny’s other men?.... You know what Sir J. Richardson has said – that the pemmican will be ready by the 15th at latest.
