Arthur Dobbs. An account of the countries adjoining to Hudson’s Bay, in the north-west part of America.... London, 1744.
Although Dobbs never saw the Bay, he believed that a passage led from Hudson Bay to the Pacific, and suspected that the Hudson’s Bay Company knew about it, but was suppressing the information to protect its monopoly. His agitation led to the first Royal Navy expedition in search of the Northwest Passage, led by Christopher Middleton.
The map shows the area west of Hudson Bay that was being opened up by
the fur trade, and an imaginary west coast based on wishful thinking.
