The Book of Mormon
This first edition copy by the founder of Mormonism is part of the canon of religious texts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This edition includes the account of Joseph Smith's discovery of the golden tablets, from which the Mormons date their history. Since many of the original print run of 5000 have been lost, first edition copies have become something of a "Holy Grail" for book collectors.
The creasing visible on the title page is a hallmark of the first edition. It was caused by the stretching of dampened paper during the impression of the type. Unfortunately, this copy has lost its original leather covers. The last leaf comprises the sworn statements of those who saw the gold coloured metal plates containing the word of God as revealed to Joseph Smith.
