George Agnew Reid
George Agnew Reid (1860-1947) was born in Wingham Ontario. Reid studied under John Arthur Fraser at the Ontario School of Art and Design, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he was inspired by the broad and modern brushwork of artist Thomas Eakins. He continued his studies at the Julien Academy in Paris with a number of artists including Benjamin Constant. He was head of the Ontario College of Art and President of the Ontario Society of Artists and was instrumental in developing the early mandate and direction of the National Gallery of Art. He lived in the artist community of Wychwood Park, near Bathurst and St. Clair. Reid went on to produce a series of mural cycles in public buildings in Toronto including the recently restored murals at Dufferin St. Clair Public Library.
