John Arthur Fraser

John Arthur Fraser (1838-1898) was born in London, England and moved to Canada around 1860. He worked for the photographer William Notman in Montreal and then later as a partner with Notman in Toronto. In 1883, he left commercial photography and painted full-time. He travelled by rail to Quebec, New Brunswick and across the Rocky Mountains to sketch. Fraser was a teacher at the Ontario School of Art and Design and member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. His Canadian landscape paintings were well received in Toronto and exhibited in New York, Boston, London and Paris. Eventually settling in New York, Fraser was involved in a number of artist groups including the New York Water Colour Club and received recognition from his peers and well as collectors for his distinctive landscape paintings.
