The Great Fire of Toronto started on April 19, 1904 and was first discovered in a building at 58-60 Wellington Street West, just west of Bay. The fire spread rapidly, and it took 230 fire fighters nine hours to bring the blaze under control.
The fire fully or partly destroyed 98 commercial buildings covering 20 acres (8 hectares) in Toronto's mercantile area. Between five and six thousand people were left jobless. The loss in 1904 dollars was estimated to be $10.3 million, of which $8.4 million was covered by insurance. Miraculously there were no deaths.
