The "cut and cover" method was used to build the Yonge Street subway. During its five-year construction, Yonge Street was completely torn up for most of the four-and-a-half-mile (about seven kilometres) route, causing no end of grief for local merchants. The subway opened in 1954; it was financed totally through the fare box.
