“Nib Loved to Come Home, Wash Up and Fall Asleep Surrounded by his Colourful Treasures”
for The Subway Mouse (Toronto: North Winds, 2002).
Plasticine and mixed media collage
Gift of the artist.
“Images from nature found on discarded wrappers, stamps and postcards, real objects such as feathers and maple keys, and a rainbow of colour collected from trash all help conjure up the fairy tale world of ‘Tunnel’s End’ for Nib, the subway mouse.
A picture fragment of the Cheshire cat is a nod to the looking glass world of Lewis Carroll and a foreshadowing of real dangers to come. While Nib has only every experienced the artificial night of the subway, his copy of Van Gogh’s painting ‘Starry Night’ helps him dream about the beauty of the real thing.
The illustrations are a combination of modelled plasticine and collage that includes feathers, paper and flowers. Graphite dust was brushed onto the artwork for a grimy effect.”
