“During the time I was illustrating The Emperor’s Panda, I got to quite like the title character. Sometimes, when an illustrator is lucky, the characters in the tale become quite real and seem to suggest the drawings themselves. This was one of those times. I set up the scenes for the panda, but he did pretty much what he wanted within them.”
