“The Boys Opened their Arms to Embrace the Spirit”
for Tomson Highway’s Caribou Song (Toronto: HarperCollins, 2001)
Oil on canvas

Purchased with the assistance of the Elizabeth L. Gordon Art Challenge Programme, Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation.

“I love Tomson’s text, the words shimmer and dance for me. There is a musical sensation in the rhythm of the text that I find quite joyous. The ‘Embrace the Spirit’ painting was one of the first images that came to me (in my mind’s eye) upon inital reading of the story. The visual of the boys with their arms upstretched, embracing the voice of the herd was an image too inviting to pass up. The power, the spiritual and a sense of seduction all in one moment.”
