Ichikawa Danjuro VIII held his name from March 1832, when he was ten years old, to his death by suicide at age 32. In 1832 his father, Ichikawa Danjuro VII, who was in the middle of his career, passed the name to his son. The father assumed the stage name of Ebizo, and became Ichikawa Ebizo V for the rest of his career. Ichikawa Danjuro VIII was the most famous actor of his generation and the subject of much adulation by the public. Danjuro VIII’s death was said to have inspired more than 100 different obituary portraits.
